CHOICE THEORY

All the training programmes run by the Association for Reality Therapy Finland are based on Choice Theory, originated by Dr. William Glasser.

According to Choice Theory, our behaviour is based on our attempt to meet our own specific needs and certain universal needs.

These five universal needs are:
1. Love and belonging
2. Power and self worth
3. Freedom
4. Fun and enjoying life
5. Survival

Our behaviour is total and made up of four components:
- acting,
- thinking,
- feelings and
- physiology.

In this four-field model, each component affects the other three. In the Total Behaviour Model, the easiest way to affect change is through acting and thinking. Our feeling and physiology are effectively changed through our way of thinking and acting.
